Static Turn
For this piece, I wanted to create a geometric representation of motion. To make this artwork, I took a burst of pictures as one of my classmates turned in a circle. From these images I extracted the basic geometric forms of the human body and superimposed them on top of each other. When I first made this art piece, it was only a fun exploration of color and form. Looking back at it, I realize it was one of the first times I began to play with the contrast between structure and fluidness. It is a constant theme in my pieces. Not only that, but it is also a characteristic of architecture that I am mesmerized by, with the way architects create fluid yet rigid structures.
Vitruvian Woman
I wanted to use known images and adopt them into a piece of my own. I decided to recreate (or forge) the Vitruvian Man by Da Vinci but twisted the concept. Rather than showing the perfect anatomy of the man, I chose to create a collage of how the representation of women in art has evolved throughout different historical contexts and cultures. Making sure I was inclusive and true to the world's diversity, I included pieces from all over the world. I wanted to keep the concept of forgery by creating copies of famous artistic images but still made sure I was using them into a different way. I tried to push the definition beyond its bounds.
